A lady with long dark hair is sleeping peacefully under a natural coloured organic cotton duvet

Do you toss and turn at night?  Do you wake up feeling clammy in summer and freezing in winter? It might be time to ditch your synthetic duvet and embrace the natural luxury of camel hair.

Used for centuries by nomadic people, this exceptional fibre is a great duvet filling for those needing next level heat regulating, without the weight, whilst staying sustainable.

Why camel hair is a fantastic filling

The secret to camel hair's amazing performance lies in its origins, the harsh, fluctuating climate of the central Asian desert.  Bactrian camels (the double humped kind where our camel hair comes from) endure scorching days and near-freezing nights, and their coat has evolved to handle it all.

  • Unrivalled temperature regulation: The hair is made of hollow fibres, which create an insulating air cushion. This allows the duvet to act like a natural climate control system.

    • In winter: It traps heat efficiently to keep you cosy

    • In summer: It rapidly wicks away moisture (your sweat) and excess heat, releasing it into the air to keep you cool and dry. This thermoregulatory property is its single biggest advantage.

  • Lightweight softness: The downy undercoat of the camel, the part used for duvets, is luxuriously soft and supple.  Compared to wool, camel hair offers significant warmth without the weight.  If you prefer a weighty duvet then we recommend checking out our organic wool duvet range.

  • High moisture-wicking: Camel hair can absorb up to 40% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp, much higher than sheep's wool. This is key for a comfortable, non-clammy night's sleep.

Who needs a camel hair duvet?

This fabulous fibre is perfect for several types of sleepers:

  1. The "hot and cold" sleeper: If you regularly wake up either sweaty or shivery, your body struggles with temperature stability. Camel hair's top notch thermoregulation provides a perfectly even, stable microclimate for you all night long.

  2. Those prone to night sweats: Due to its superior moisture-wicking capability, camel hair is an excellent choice for anyone who experiences night sweats, as it draws moisture away from the skin fast.

  3. Those who only want one duvet: Its adaptive nature means a medium-weight camel hair duvet can often serve comfortably as a high-quality, year-round option, eliminating the need to switch between summer and winter bedding.

  4. Allergy sufferers: Camel hair is naturally hypoallergenic, resisting dust mites, mould, and bacteria, making it a great choice for those with allergies and sensitive skin.

Super sustainability: camel hair and organic cotton

The combination of a camel hair filling and an organic cotton cover elevates your duvet to a new level of sustainability luxury.

Organic cotton:

  • Grown in line with nature - organic cotton is grown without harmful chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. This means cleaner soil, less water pollution, less water used in the farming which all lead to a  healthier environment for farmers and you.

  • Biodegradable: As a natural fibre, organic cotton is biodegradable, unlike synthetic covers

  • Minimal processing:  Our covers are undyed, and organic cotton fabrics are made without toxic bleaches, dodgy dyes and harmful processing agents that can irriatate skin

Camel hair:

  • Cruelty-free collection: Camels are not sheared, instead, they naturally shed their winter coats in large clumps each spring, which are then ethically collected by hand-combing or simply gathering the fallen hair. A stress-free process for the animal.

  • Biodegradable: As a natural fibres, both camel hair and organic cotton are fully biodegradable at the end of its very long life, leaving behind no harmful plastic waste, compared to synthetic fillings and covers.

  • Minimal processing:  Our camel hair is used in its natural, rich-brown colour, requiring no chemical dyes or harsh treatments, further reducing its environmental footprint.

Why isn't your camel hair organic?

This is a common and important question we get asked, with the vast majority of our products certified to Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) you may be wondering why our camel hair duvets aren't.  While camel hair is one of the most natural and sustainably sourced animal fibres available, it generally does not carry an official organic certification like cotton or wool.

The main reason is the lack of a regulated organic standard for nomadic livestock.  Organic certification requires verifiable standards for an animal's diet, living conditions, and veterinary care, ensuring the animals consume natural food free from GMOs, are not routinely fed antibiotics, and instead only treated with medicine if they are sick.  Bactrian camels are often raised by nomadic or semi-nomadic herders in vast, open Central Asian pastures where they graze on natural desert flora.  Because their environment is largely wild and their movement is wide-ranging, it is practically impossible to certify them, as they are not confined to a farm or to control every aspect of their natural, free-roaming life according to a strict, global organic livestock standard.

Therefore, while the camel hair fibres are ethically and naturally sourced—collected via a humane, shed-based process and minimally processed—it cannot be certifed as organic. It is, however, widely regarded as one of the most environmentally conscious and natural animal fibres available in the textile industry.   Our duvet cases are made from GOTS certified organic cotton.
