The idea for Greenfibres – an organic and natural bedding and clothing company - was born in a Brussels living room in the early 90’s. After having worked in the financial industry in London, Frankfurt, New York and Brussels we realised it was vital for consumers to change resource intensive habits and become more focused on sustainability and community. We were appalled at what we learned when we researched the conventional textile industry and spent 2 years exploring the opportunities that existed to encourage more responsible and ethical textile production in the future. We finally launched Greenfibres in Greenwich in 1996 and our company has pioneered organic and sustainable textiles ever since.
From the start Greenfibres has been pushing the ecological boundaries for textile products and we are often the first company to offer them in the UK. Our range includes innovative fabrics such as organic cotton, local hemp, ethical silk, organic linen, naturally dyed organic wool, as well as other natural and eco fibres such as camel hair, alpaca, kapok and 100% natural latex. Many of the goods sold through shops, mail order catalogues and online, are made at our manufacturing facility just outside of Plymouth. We also work closely with several small manufacturing operations in different parts of Europe (Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania and Turkey) and selected projects in India, South America and Egypt that are run under strict fair trade working conditions.
Our business has relationships with many small and medium size eco companies who provide us with everything from printing and biodegradable packaging products, electricity supply to insurance services. Whenever possible we ‘keep things local’ because we appreciate the need to minimise our carbon footprint and the social responsibility we hold beyond the manufacturing of the items we sell.
Our customer base has grown steadily over the years. We are very proud of this fact and believe this is a result of:
- our excellent range of products and dedicated customer service,
- a growing awareness of consumers with regards to the ecological consequences of their collective purchasing decisions and
- increasing concerns over the effects on our health of mass produced conventional household products.
However, the mission won't be over until everyone from farmer to designer, producer to consumer appreciates - and acts upon - the fact that we do not really have a choice if we want our grandchildren to have the same opportunities we had. The textile industry must clean up its act!
Greenfibres is licensed by the Soil Association (number X8731) and all products labelled as organic have been certified by a third party approved to undertake such certifications by IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements). Greenfibres is a founding member of the Organic Trade Board and SEEwhatyouarebuyinginto.org. and participates in numerous activities to support and grow awareness and use of organic and ethical fibres.
Let’s all be the change we want to see!
With best wishes
